III. A / Practice Papers / 141 Learning from Complexity Theory: Is Strategic Planning Obsolete? During the last few years, twentieth century scientific thinking has been creating ripples and raising questions in the business world. These ripples, in the form of complexity theory (which includes chaos theory) have challenged the notions of scientific management, including strategic planning. Complexity theory suggests that a predictable, orderly universe is over, and with it strategic planning. Scientific management, as a discipline, began with theorists like Taylor and managers like Fayol who saw strategic planning as predicting the future, setting goals, and describing how to get there. This orderly process corresponded to Newton’s laws in which he applied the principle of gravity and laws of motion to predict an orderly and controlled universe. In both, the ability to predict and control the future is paramount. In today’s world, the ability to do either is impossible.

Chaos/Complexity Theory and Education
Sciences exist to demonstrate the fundamental order underlying nature. Chaos/complexity theory is a novel and amazing field of scientific inquiry. Notions of our everyday experiences are somehow in connection to the laws of nature through chaos/complexity theory’s concerns with the relationships between simplicity and complexity, between orderliness and randomness (Retrieved from http://www.inc...

The current study aimed to examine the effects of strategic planning, online planning, strategic planning and online planning combined (joint planning), and no planning on the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of oral productions in two simple and complex narrative tasks. Eighty advanced EFL learners performed one simple narrative task and a complex narrative task with 20 minutes in between. Th...

The present study seeks to rethink the role of the teacher in the teaching-learning process according to the complexity theory. First, the role of the teacher is explained in the traditional vision of Comenius and Dewey's critical insight and then the role of the teacher is discussed in the complexity theory. Then, the teacher’s image as an emergence facilitator is suggested instead of their im...
